RECLAIMED SAWN RAILWAY SLEEPERS ECO TREATED 2.4m x 200 x 110mm
Cut down from long lasting reclaimed railway sleepers making them more manageable they are straight and square edged on all four faces, but keep the character of and old traditional railway sleeper.
Where traditional railway sleepers can be heavy to lift, especially the 2.6m x 250mm x 150mm size railway sleepers which can weigh as much as 75 - 80 kilos these sawn sleepers weight approximately 40-50 kilos. Bear this in mind when you are ordering your particular size of railway sleeper. How do I plan to carry the railway sleepers into position? (e.g. the back of a garden).
Treatment. Where these have been sawn most of the tar and creosote has been removed. They are then dipped in an environmentally friendly preservative for longevity, so they are usable in most areas where traditional sleepers aren't. For further details about creosote please read notice below.
These reclaimed sawn railway sleepers are probably between 20 - 50 years old, depending on which section of railway they came.
Easier to cut. You'll need a circular saw / chainsaw / powered saw to cut these railway sleepers. Occasionally people try by handsaw, but you have to be very determined or fit. As with any project, it makes sense to try and limit the amount of cuts you need to do. Try and plan a design that fits with the size of our railway sleepers!
Timberlok will probably not screw through these railway sleepers without a pilot hole, even if the drill is powerful, so it makes sense to pre-drill.
Because of recent findings relating to creosote there are restrictions on where creosote- treated timber can be used. The vast majority of applications are still absolutely fine, and the times when you cannot use any of the creosote-treated sleepers; marked on the following pages with this: -TR- Are basically when you are making seating, using railway sleepers indoors or making a play area for children The full list of prohibitions, according to EC & EEC regulations, is as follows: Inside building, whatever their purpose. In toys. In playgrounds. In Garden furniture. In gardens where there is a risk of `frequent` skin contact "frequent" is advised by the DTI to mean "habitual or constant" so no furniture or leaning posts!
The practice observed by us and all our customers is simply to wear gloves when handling treated railway sleepers.
