Tales from the Yard: A Day in the Life of a Female Reclamation Dealer

Established in 1995 by Mr Stephen Meyrick, Stax Reclamation Ltd continues to be a family-run business with salvage at its heart. Stephen's great-grandfather (Mr. Herbert Perry) owned a reclamation yard under the name "H. Perry" from 1948 to the mid-1960s in a post-war landscape where the culture of not wasting materials was more commonplace.

Reclamation is a long-standing family tradition for the Meyrick family, and the business is now headed up by Stephen's daughter Lou. Whilst the world of architectural salvage is sometimes rather male-dominated, female reclamation dealer Lou brings her keen creative eye and sharp business acumen to her role and the business is stronger than ever.

The Popularity of Reclamation

We have seen a big surge in the popularity of reclamation over the past few years as people realise the importance of protecting our planet by reusing and recycling the materials we already have, rather than manufacturing and transporting new ones. Far from seeing items thrown away, the ethos here at Stax is that everything can be saved - old and new can be the best of friends. Providing the local area with salvaged building materials enables customers to restore and revive their period homes and gardens with pieces of the relevant time, or furnish them with the weird and wonderful range of antiques in stock.

We specialise in giving old items a new lease of life through restoration and alteration, using materials on site to create one-off pieces staying true to the “recycle” and moving on to the "upcycle" trend which has become hugely popular. You can see some examples of this in the 'Made By Us' collection online, and we have even more here in the yard and showroom too.

Lou says...

"One of the best things about running a reclamation yard, is arriving in the morning never knowing what the day will bring. My first job is usually to work my way through emails and phone messages from people offering us things for sale. I always get a little buzz of excitement wondering what exciting finds we might encounter each day. I have become pretty good at seeing the potential in an item, I can see it as it is, and I can imagine it repurposed for a new and exciting life. I love the sense of excitement, never knowing what weird and wonderful thing will be brought into the yard and what magic we can work with it".

We look forward to welcoming you to our reclamation yard in Saltash soon.
