Reclaimed Fireplaces for the Heart of the Home

With all the cold, stormy weather we’ve been experiencing lately, your thoughts might have turned to having a cosy warming fire burning away during the cold evenings. If you’re looking to install a fireplace or woodburner, then a reclaimed fireplace has all the soul you hope for in the heart of your home. Why buy new when you can find a treasured relic from another era bursting with character and charm?

Our carefully-chosen collection of reclaimed fireplaces and mantels come from all over the UK and beyond. Whether you’re looking for a Victorian pine antique surround or a salvaged cast iron fire basket, here at Stax we have a wide range of fireplaces and accessories. Whether you are seeking antique fireplaces, salvaged mantels or a fireplace handmade to order from reclaimed timber, come and find exactly what you're looking for here at Stax.

Historical Fireplaces in a Nutshell

Starting life outdoors, original fireplaces have their origins in the simple wrought iron firedogs which were set on open earth during Medieval times. In the 18th Century more elaborate fire baskets and dog grates were developed, and the discovery of cast iron revolutionised fireplaces, leading to cast iron inserts which became popular in the Victorian period.

As we moved into the 19th century, full combination fireplaces were  used (where the fire grate and the fire surround were combined), and tiles were introduced for extra decorative impact and artfulness.  Mahogany and darker woods also became popular in the Victorian era. Stoves started to make an appearance in the 19th Century and were usually designed to burn coal. These coal stoves were especially popular on the continent, were highly decorative and were often enameled for added effect.
