Why Reclamation Yards are Seeing a Resurgence

eco friendly shopping- reclamation yard

As the great cogs of globalisation turn and climate change looms ever larger, repurposing old materials has never been more important. Shopping considerately and understanding how to lessen our carbon footprint is one of the reasons why reclamation yards are seeing a huge resurgence in popularity right now.

A More Sustainable Way to Shop

Reusing old materials is just as important as putting your tin cans in the recycling bin; why would you buy new when buying old is so much more environmentally-friendly? As well as being a greener way to shop, reclamation yards are a treasure trove of unique and unusual finds. From architectural to inglenooks, bricks to radiators, you'll find what you're looking for (along with a few surprises) at your local reclamation yard.

Using the Past to Invest in the Future

When you choose to shop for reclaimed goods, you are investing in history. Through re-using old materials we can decrease the demand for new. By breathing new life into  old products, we can reduce the levels of pollution which are emitted in manufacturing processes.

Far from seeing items thrown away, the ethos at Stax Reclamation is that everything can be saved and repurposed. We salvage building materials from around the UK to enable home owners to restore their period homes and gardens with unique pieces relevant to the time. If you’re looking for something that will survive the test of time for your latest design project so you don’t have to replace regularly, where better to start than with something that’s already lasted a lifetime or two?

The Beauty of Reclaimed Wood

If harvested responsibly, reclaimed wood is a renewable resource that reduces landfill waste and lessens the use of environmental hazards to manufacture new products. When you use reclaimed wood or buy recycled furniture, you decrease the demand for newly sourced wood which helps curb deforestation. It’s more environmentally-sound (and more characterful!) to install an engineered reclaimed wood floor for example, than it is to install petroleum-based carpeting or linoleum. Not only this but it lasts longer; reclaimed wood is up to 40 points harder (on the Janka hardness scale) than virgin wood because it often comes from old-growth trees instead of first-generation forests.

By being smart about the wood you reuse or repurpose, you can enjoy the benefits of the reclaimed material without negative consequences for the beautiful planet we call home. From an economic and environmental standpoint, reclaimed timber makes sense.

A Reputable, Responsible Source

When you buy architectural salvage, antique garden ornaments and reclaimed building materials, you need to know that what you’re buying comes from a reputable, safe and responsible source. This is not only important for you as the consumer, but it is also important for the environment. We ensure that all of the items we source and sell here at our reclamation yard are free from toxic chemicals, legitimately sourced and fairly traded. Knowing that our sourcing comes with good provenance gives our customers confidence in the quality and safety of the products they buy.

Reclamation Yards for a Happier Planet (and a Happier You)

Here at Stax we have been reclamation and salvage experts since 1995 and have a knack of finding the perfect artefacts to add character and charm to any project. Often the ‘secret’ of interior designers, we stock items which are unique, characterful and full of history. As well as that, our savvy customers know that buying recycled furniture helps save natural resources, mine fewer metals, cut down fewer trees, and tap less petroleum. Discovering unexpected  items just waiting to be rescued is the beauty of shopping at a reclamation yard.

The planet (and your interiorscape) will thank you for shopping more wisely and visiting your local reclamation yard. We can’t wait to offer you a warm Stax welcome!
